I want to plug a new online species selection tool developed by Greening Australia and CSIRO for the Florabank website.
The Species Navigator is a Lucid key (same software as the Euclid Eucalypt ID tool). The user selects a number of attributes for the project they are selecting species for, and the key suggests species that are suitable. Attributes can be geographical (state, NRM region, IBRA region etc), end-use (sawn timber, poles, charcoal etc), environmental (soil type, rainfall etc) or combinations of several. Currently the Navigator has 150 common revegetation species from across Australia but more are added regularly. Many of the species are important native agroforestry species.
Much of the work was done by Maurice McDonald of CSIRO, who is a co-author of the latest edition of Forest Trees of Australia. There is a fact sheet for each species with lots of information about collecting seed, growing, establishing and using these species.
See it at www.florabank.org.au. Listed under 'Seed Knowledge'. You will need to enable Java on your computer to see it.
